The engineer app that keeps going when the signal drops

Engineers open Field Forge in their phone’s browser and see today’s jobs in the order you planned. One button moves each job on, from On my way to Finish job, and their time, checklist ticks and the customer’s signature are recorded against the job. Status, time, checklists and forms keep saving with no signal and send when it returns.

The problem it solves

Job details scattered across messages

Addresses, access notes and what the customer asked for arrive as messages and screenshots. Things get missed, and the office answers the same questions all day.

Hours and sign-off on paper

Hours are written up at the end of the week and the signed job sheet is still in the van. When a customer queries a visit, there is nothing to show them.

No signal, no app

Plant rooms, basements and rural sites have no signal. An app that needs a connection to save anything stops your engineers halfway through the job.

How it works

  1. 1

    Today’s jobs, in your order

Today lists the engineer’s jobs, numbered in the stop order the office planned, and each job shows the site’s access and hazard notes and its what3words. Directions opens Apple Maps on an iPhone and Google Maps on other phones, and the Jobs tab lists the next 14 days.

  2. 2

    One button through the job

The button reads On my way, I’ve arrived, Start work, Take a break and Finish job. Start work clocks the engineer in to the job and records the time and where they were; travel, breaks and hours go on the job and the engineer’s timesheet.

  3. 3

Proof at the end of every visit

Checklist tasks are ticked with photos where a task asks for them, and each tick records who, when and where. The customer signs on the phone at Finish job, which will not close a visit until every task is done or skipped with a reason.

What you get

  • Today’s jobs in the stop order the office planned, with a map of the day’s route
  • One-tap status: On my way, I’ve arrived, Start work, Take a break, Finish job
  • Clock in and out on the job, recording the time and where the engineer was
  • Optional prompt to clock in on arrival at the site boundary
  • Time added by hand, checked against locked timesheets
  • The customer’s name and signature taken at Finish job
  • Checklist ticks that record who, when and where, with photos
  • Forms, inspections, notes and photos, expenses with receipts, and messages to the office, all on the job
  • Assets and plant: scan a QR label, book kit to the job and run a pre-use check
  • Photos filed into folders on the job, and marked up with arrows, boxes and text
  • An optional end-of-day diary email to your team with the notes, photos and hours logged on the day’s scheduled jobs
  • Status, time, checklists and forms keep working with no signal
  • Runs in the phone’s browser, and is what engineers on the Lite licence use

Field Engineer App: frequently asked questions

Do engineers download it from the App Store or Google Play?
No. The engineer app is part of Field Forge and opens in the phone’s browser, with its own sign-in. It is laid out for a phone, and it is what engineers on the Lite licence use.
Does the engineer app work with no signal?
Yes, once it is open. Job status, clocking in and out, breaks, travel, checklist ticks and their photos, forms and their photos, and time added by hand save on the phone and send when signal returns. Some things need signal: signing in, looking up a scanned asset label, booking kit or saving an asset check, opening a job the phone has not opened before, the customer’s signature, messages to the office, and photos posted to Notes & Photos or attached to an expense. So engineers open the app with signal at the start of the day.
What is recorded when an engineer clocks in?
Start work clocks the engineer in to the job. The app records the time and, if the phone has a location fix within a few seconds, where they were, at clock-in and again at clock-out. A missing fix never stops a clock-in. Breaks pause the clock, and the hours go on the job and the engineer’s timesheet.
Can the app prompt engineers to clock in when they arrive?
Yes, if you switch it on. In Settings, Field Operations, automatic arrival detection offers Suggest, which asks the engineer to clock in when they reach the site boundary, or Auto, which clocks them in. Clocking out is never silent: a two-minute countdown on screen can be stopped. It covers today’s jobs at sites placed on the map, while the app is open on screen, and it records how far from the site the engineer was rather than blocking a clock-in.
Can the customer sign on the engineer’s phone?
Yes. Finish job asks for the customer’s name and signature, and the job then shows who signed and when. You can switch sign-off off for the whole company. The signature needs signal to save; Finish without signature works with no signal.
Can engineers add time they forgot to clock?
Yes. On the job’s Time tab, Add time by hand takes the date worked and the start and finish times. It is checked against the engineer’s timesheet and refused if that timesheet has been approved and locked. With no signal it is saved on the phone and checked once signal returns.
