How contractors use this

Frost Tonight is a quick look at the night ahead. On contract, gritting contractors import the night’s forecast into Field Forge: red and amber zones raise the salting jobs, and every night is on record, gritted or not. Winter gritting in Field Forge

Frost Tonight: frequently asked questions

Where does the Frost Tonight forecast come from?
From the Met Office site-specific hourly forecast, read at 3.30pm UK time every day for one point in each Met Office weather warning region (the city shown beside it). Frost Tonight keeps the lowest forecast air temperature between 6pm tonight and 9am tomorrow, and the hour it is forecast around.
Is this the road surface temperature?
No. It is forecast air temperature at one point in each region, and roads and car parks can be colder than the air, especially in hollows and shade. Your own road weather forecast and your contract trigger decide whether a site is gritted. Field Forge does not decide whether to grit.
What do Likely, Marginal and Unlikely mean?
Likely gritting night means the lowest forecast air temperature tonight is at or below 0°C. Marginal means above 0°C and up to 2°C. Unlikely means above 2°C. They describe the forecast for that point, nothing more.
How does the 4pm email work?
Choose your regions and enter your email address and company. Every day at 4pm you get one plain email with tonight’s lowest forecast temperature for those regions. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and we never share your address.
How does this connect to Field Forge?
In Field Forge you import the night’s road weather forecast for your own ice-prediction zones and confirm the readings. Under the default rules red and amber zones raise the salting jobs, and every run is kept on record, gritted or not.
